AA is a publication and performance project that uses a found audio recording of a letter typed by Ansel Adams, whose contents are unknown, to generate new music. Working with a sheet music transcription of the typewriter sounds as an original musical score, we enable artists and musicians to enter into diverse conversations with the letter. The content of our project will materialize as a 12” vinyl record, an original essay, and a performance of the music in the Twin Cities. In our project, the process of notation, music, performance, and printed matter elevate a seemingly insignificant past moment into new material forms.
