Apparition was created on the occasion of Megan Francis Sullivan’s exhibition click click, space space at Midway Contemporary Art from November 7 – December 20, 2014.

In Apparition, Megan Francis Sullivan placed nine Formica tables in a grid in the middle of the exhibition space. A subtle extension of Midway’s library into the gallery, they reenact library tables from the Cooper Union in New York; the original tables are attributed to John Hejduk, architect and dean of the School of Architecture from 1975 – 2000.

Megan Francis Sullivan initiated the edition of 9 tables in response to ongoing protests around the Cooper Union and the stunted end of its 150-year tuition-free tradition. They are vessels that might carry ghosts of the daring, visionary, and fanciful institution founded in 1859 by industrialist Peter Cooper.

Following the institution’s actions, Sullivan felt an urge to preserve the tables, and to feebly protect some aspects of what they represent. They are objects that live beyond an institutional location and can be used for reading, working, eating, as a pedestal, or whatever one can imagine.

All proceeds will go toward future programming at Midway Contemporary Art.
