About the Visual Arts Fund

The Visual Arts Fund is a new grant program established by Midway Contemporary Art with generous support from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Minneapolis-St.Paul will be the eleventh metro area included in Warhol’s Regional Regranting program, which is aimed at promoting vibrant artistic activity in cities across the United States.

The Visual Arts Fund will award five $5,000 and three $10,000 grants to artists in the Twin Cities metro region. The VAF supports the development of experimental projects and/or new initiatives that engage the public with visual art. Proposals must name a lead organizer, but can include any number of artists as collaborators; individuals or groups may apply. The VAF program seeks to support a wide array of innovative and diverse projects that otherwise might not occur.


About the Warhol Foundation’s Regional Regranting Program

The Regional Regranting Program, launched in 2007, aims to support vibrant, under-the-radar and self-organized artistic activity by partnering with leading cultural institutions in communities across the country. Midway is the eleventh organization to host the Warhol Foundation’s Regional Regranting program, making funding available for artists in the Twin Cities metro area.

Ten additional programs have been developed and facilitated by organizations in Albuquerque, Baltimore, Chicago, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, New Orleans, Portland (OR), Portland (ME) and San Francisco, each providing grants for the creation and public presentation of new work in their regions. 

What We Fund

  • Projects that are accessible to the public

  • Projects could include exhibitions or installations held in temporary spaces, new publications, a series of events or performances, digital initiatives, public art projects, and other activities that are related to the visual arts

What We Do Not Fund

  • An individual artist presenting exclusively their own work

  • Projects that are part of the programming of a 501(c)3 non-profit organization

  • Projects at a commercial gallery

  • Projects that are not publicly accessible


  • Lead organizer must live within the seven-county Twin Cities Metro region (Hennepin, Scott, Ramsey, Dakota, Anoka, Carver, and Washington counties); additional collaborators can live anywhere.

  • Projects must take place within the seven-county Twin Cities Metro.

  • 501c3s, incorporated businesses, and students are not eligible to apply.

  • Projects must be artist-organized and self-initiated; projects cannot be part of the programming of any nonprofit or commercial gallery.

  • Projects cannot start before January 1, 2017, and must be completed by June 30, 2018.

  • Lead organizers do not need to be U.S. Citizens, but must have social security numbers in order to receive payment.

  • Lead organizers may only submit one application per application round.

  • Projects cannot charge admission or other fees to the public or to participants.

  • Projects must function primarily within a visual arts context (rather than performing arts, music, literature, or other arts). Projects can have interdisciplinary elements, but must have a strong basis in the visual arts.

What is a lead organizer?

If the project involves a group of artists working together, please choose one person to act as the lead organizer. This contact person will be responsible for receiving grant funds and overseeing the project. You may work with as many collaborators and/or artists as you wish.

Project Budget

Be realistic about your income and expenses. This program supports fair pay for artists. You are not necessarily expected to have income outside of the Visual Arts Fund grant, but please indicate it if you do. Examples of in-kind expenses include donated space, pro-bono design services, donated materials, etc.

Visual Support Materials

Visual support materials should help the jurors understand the project and your ability to realize it. For each of your support materials, please list: artist’s name, title, medium, year, size, description and relevant explanatory notes (max 50 words per entry). You may include up to 13 examples total, including:

  • Images (up to 10, max 2MB each — .jpeg, .jpg, .gif and .png are accepted)
  • Videos (up to 3 videos, max 2 min each — video files must be hosted on a video platform such as YouTube or Vimeo)
  • Web-based projects (up to 3 urls)
  • Print materials as pdfs (up to 3, max 5 pages each)


Please provide a short, narrative bio for your lead organizer, as well as your group or organization (max 250 words) and for key collaborators and artists (up to 8 bios, max 250 words each). Focus on experience relevant to this project. We will not accept CVs or resumes.
